Interview with Sarah Kemp

Here's a nice interview with Sarah Kemp which aired on The Golf Show a few weeks ago now. She's having an "ok" year on the tour but I thought her comments about the short game of players on the tour is worth hearing.

"...there's some pretty average golf swings out there but they can get up and down."

Great golf interviews

This week has seen a great number of great interviews cross Aussie Golfer's cluttered desk. One after the other they rolled in and if you haven't read them yourself, treat yourself and check out the links to them.
  • Bob ShearerThe first great golf interview I read on the plane from Sydney to Melbourne last week. My one hour flight seemed to take 5 minutes as I immersed myself in the best golf article I have read for many years. Bob Shearer was interviewed by Australian Golf Digest for their August 2009 magazine and it's fantastic. He was one of Australia's great moustached golfers, winning 27 times in his professional career including one win on the PGA Tour.

He talks candidly about his regret in leaving the PGA Tour and about the time he whacked Tiger on the chin with a door. Here's a snippet from the interview where he talks about hanging out with Jack Nicklaus:
"Fantastic. Nicest bloke I ever met," Shearer says of Nicklaus.

"My first Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village - I played at Pinehurst in '75 but he invited me to his first Muirfield tournament in '76. We were staying in the Hilton Hotel near the course there and apparently Jack and Barbara were staying there - and he asked us to come to dinner with them, just him and Barbara and Kathie and me. Well, I couldn't get there quick enough.

"It was quite daunting having dinner with your idol. He was my idol and I was sitting there having dinner trying to make conversation. At the end of dinner he said, 'Dessert's not too good here. I've got to do a few signatures. Barbara, you get the car and bring it around the front. Bob and Kathie, get in the car with Barbara. I'll do these things and I'll be out.' So we went out from there and went down the road to a Baskin-Robbins ice creamery.

"Now, I walked in there with Jack Nicklaus. They didn't know who I was, but they knew who he was. We got the ice creams and do you know where we ate them? We sat in the gutter and ate the ice creams. That's the truth, the honest truth. We're sitting on the kerb and… he's a regular person. I couldn't believe it. That was 1976 and it made me think, Christ Almighty, this is the No.1 player in the world, by far, and I'm with him sitting on a kerb in Ohio having an ice cream. And he's driven me here and he'll drive me home. Unbelievable."

  • The ABC have an interview with Peter Thomson in their video section as a tribute to the great Australian golfer as part of his 80th birthday celebrations. Check it out if you have a spare few minutes. It's always fascinating to hear him speak.

Magnetic shirts from Greg Norman Collection

The Spring 2010 Greg Norman Collection will introduce a range to shirts that appear just like many other shirts you may have seen before. They come in black, frost or cardinal colours with pin-stripes or pin-dots and contain anti-microbial and sun protecting material. But a particular shirt has an extra component built in - liquid titanium magnetic crystals.

According to the company, the "liquid titanium magnetic crystals" spun into the polyester shirt,
"...creates beneficial negative ions, which balance the positive ions and increase serotonin levels." The “ion” is similar in principle to the various bracelets and necklaces that some athletes wear, which they say uses the mystic physics of “minus ions” to improve an athlete's performance and promote an overall sense of physical well being.
Mystic physics? Ok.

I thought all of this sort of stuff had been put behind us many years ago with the Mayo Clinic's report on the Q-Ray Bracelet back in 2002 and the subsequent court case in 2007. Admittedly, like the Q-Ray bracelet which you can still buy (and is used by many golfers) the shirts don't claim all this mystic physics actually does anything in particular. Well, apart from improving an athlete's performance and creating beneficial negative ions. The second being not so easy to measure.

Buy the shirts when the 2010 collection is officially released. They look great and no doubt they feel great - even Greg Norman is reportedly going to be wearing the shirts in tournaments. They may actually help you and The Shark play better. The Q-Ray bracelet reduced pain on many people - just like the placebo bracelet did.

If you're looking for more reliable methods to improve your golf game without worrying if your negative ions are flowing - hit more balls and practice your putting - whether you buy the shirts or not.

World Minigolf Championships

world minigolf championships
What were you doing on Saturday? Out playing 18 holes or hitting a few balls on the range? While you were doing that and I was cleaning the house, the 2009 World Minigolf Championships were taking place in Odense, Denmark.

The world of minigolf has come a long way since the very first course was built at St.Andrew's in 1867. A purpose built minigolf course was built last week in Denmark in an indoor arena. Individual and teams events were held for both men and women over eight rounds which saw Sweden make a clean sweep of the tournament.

WMF Sports Director Gerhard Zimmermann says it best:

"The 10th Minigolf World Championships, which took place for the first time as an indoor event have been a full success on a very high sport level. The spectators could follow thrilling matches in an exciting atmosphere during the matchplay finals of the individual competition. The overwhelming winner is the Swedish Minigolf Federation, who won all four gold medals in team and individual competition."

Exciting atmosphere, thrilling matches - can anyone really have topped that last Saturday? I can't but my house is clean.

Amazing golf swing

This golf routine is just too weird, crazy, bizarre, funny and unbelievable not so share with you. I came across it through Shane Bacon's "Dogs That Chase Cars" and Geoff Shackleford's websites.

I'm really not sure of what to say about this. I thought Charles Barkley's golf swing was bad. Could it be a joke? It's no doubt hilarious and reeks of something Sascha Baron-Cohen might do.

I've watched it 3 or 4 times now and I'm speechless. The pre-shot routine looks like a constipated pair of scissors.

Another Aussie joins PGA Tour

Michael SimMichael Sim has won for the third time on the Nationwide Tour this morning earning him instant promotion to the PGA Tour. He earnt battlefield promotion after a 2-stroke victory in Kansas in a solid, solid win.

This guy has just dominated the Nationwide Tour completely this year in a display not seen before. He's made the cut at both of the majors he competed in - finishing 18th at US Open and 51st at the US PGA.

Aussie Golfer saw Michael Sim play a few events on the Australian Tour late last year and saw a great swing and a cool headed golfer. My only conern was whether he had the mettle to grind out and win championships.

It's obvious now he does. I see this guy rising to the cream of Australian golf very fast. He'll win a PGA Tour event in the next two years.

Birth of the hybrid golf club

hybrid golf clubIn 1982, Jim Simons became the first tour player to win a professional tournament with metal woods in his bag and edespite Justin Leonard winning The Open Championship in 1997 with persimmon woods, it set metal woods firmly into golf bags around the world.

Y.E. Yang's majestic approach shot to the final hole at Hazeltine last Sunday to win the PGA Championship, has now firmly set hybrid golf clubs into golf bags around the world. The shot has been reported many times, each time using the words "3-iron hybrid" or words to that effect. The details are mentioned over and over not just for its brilliance and Yang's courage but for its role in the great Tiger cull of 2009.

I wonder how many non-golfers are wondering just what a "3-iron hybrid" is - an electric powered shot perhaps? I wonder how many golfers who had previously expressed a dislike for the new style of clubs are now reconsidering? I wonder if Tiger himself is asking Steve Williams if he minds carrying one more club?

I've come across many weekend golfers of varying skill levels that refuse to put a hybrid golf club in the bag because its not right - "....and anyway, Tiger doesn't even use one".

It's a debate that echoes the one about putting from off the green. It's refused on grounds varying from "not wanting to give-in to bad chipping" to "it's not right - the putter's for the putting green". The fact remains, you need to get the ball in the hole in as few shots as possible. Many golfers cut off their nose to spite their face.

Y.E. YangHerein lies the beauty of the hybrid which many golfers already know. It's easier to hit than a 3-iron and can be used from a multitude of lies and situations. Like any new club it takes a little bit of getting used to but thanks to Yang Yong-Eun's history making shot, it can hold it's hybrid head high with a new nickname - "A Tiger Beater".

Hurry! EZLinks discount ending soon!

Just a quick post to remind everyone the great discount on some fantastic Australian golf courses ends soon.

Head to EZLinks Australia Tee Time Specials, choose a date you want to play, your course and the number of golfers. Log in or register and then enter the coupon code "AUSSIEGOLF" to get the great discounted offer (50% off already discounted tee times) only until August 31, 2009. Website prices are in USD.

Already I've had some feedback from golfers who have taken up the offer and they couldn't believe the value when they recently played out at Kooindah Waters.

Masters nearing sell out

It seems the Australian Masters is almost sold out. Offering 20,000 tickets a day, 90% of tickets have been sold, three months out from the event. Tickets for Thursday and Saturday are still available through www.ticketek.com.au or 132 849.

It was also announced last week that Channel Nine have secured the rights to broadcast the Australian Masters for the next two years. They've obviously realised the impact Tiger Woods will have at the event this year and suddenly jumped on board.

Familiar with the scheduling of golf from Nine in the past, I'm really not sure this is a good thing. Luckily, FoxSports is also covering the event.

Oakley Armchair Sessions: Ian Poulter

Oakley have shot a series of classy short videos in the company of Ian Poulter as part of their Armchair Sessions interviews. They've interviewed a whole host of great sports people and this is the first time they've put a golfer in the armchair.

It's not surprising Ian Poulter's an outgoing dude and a great interview. He chats about his hole-in-one at the Masters, his desire to try skiing and also gives a few tips on how to play a nice lob shot out of a bunker over a chair.

Below I've added his take on being a fashion icon and a hilarious look at how to get out of the trees. Head on over to YouTube to check out all nine of the videos of the Oakley Armchair Sessions with Ian Poulter.

The two major quakes from Y.E. Yang

Here's the footage of the two amazing shots from Y.E. Yang in the 2009 PGA Championship. Firstly, the chip in for eagle on 14 and then the incredible hybrid on 18. Commentary in Spanish!

Yang sets off golf earthquake

Did you feel that? Did anyone else feel that?

I’m guessing even non-golfers may have felt a rumble. Y.E. Yang has single-handedly created a golfing earthquake by winning the PGA Championship.

He’s beaten Tiger Woods and all of the associated statistics that come with it. The most notable one being that Tiger had never been beaten in a major championship on 14 occasions after leading after three rounds.

The first major quake came on the 14th when Yang chipped in from off the green for eagle to out-bird Tiger’s paltry birdie.

After this ornithological moment came the second and biggest shock wave on the final hole. Faced with a tough pin and middle of the green looking like a perfect option, Yang fired a hybrid over bunkers and trees to land his ball within a few feet of the hole, eventually settling around 6 feet away.

Yang appeared to fly in the face of his famous opponent. He threw a ball into the crowd before Tiger putted out on 15 and then putted out along Tiger’s line on the 16th green. I think most other golfers would have marked their ball and let His Royal Highness putt first. It almost appeared like Yang didn’t know who Woods was. Probably the perfect way to play against him.

This was a major golf earthquake. The biggest shock we’ve had for quite some time. The after-shocks will reverberate around the globe for quite sometime with a major tsunami of equally willing and classy Asian golfers following shortly.

Ashes Golf

This may the craziest idea Aussie Golfer has ever had.

Watching the Ashes series this year I wondered whether we need to consider the idea of an Ashes Golf Series. I realise on first thoughts the whole idea may sound a little ridiculous but just give me a moment.

It could be staged at the end of every second year. Maybe even in line with the Ashes cricket series. Obviously the host country would be alternated and a matchplay format would take place along the lines of the Presidents and Ryder Cups.

If it was played right now this would be the teams:

Australia England
Geoff Ogilvy Paul Casey
Robert Alleby Lee Westwood
Adam Scott Ian Poulter
Mathew Goggin Ross Fisher
Brendan Jones Luke Donald
Aaron Baddeley Oliver Wilson
Rod Pampling Justing Rose
Michael Sim Chris Wood
John Senden Nick Dougherty
Stuart Appleby Anthony Wall

On current form, I reckon we'd get walloped but there's some fantastic match-up's and while it wouldn't have the global build up the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup has, it would be invaluable experience for players on both sides.

The more I think about this the more I think it could work. The interest would extend outside the realms of your normal golfing follower. Australia likes beating England at anything. England likes to return the favour just as much right?

I am under no illusions that this will most probably never get off the ground due to the already jammed packed golfing calendar. It would take the players to get on board for this to happen.

I am still interested in your thoughts. What do you think, crazy idea or one to muse over a little more?

Allenby clawing for a major

The final major comes our way this week in the form of the PGA Championship. From Australia's point of view we have 13 golfer's teeing it up and there's been a glimmer of good form coming from a few of these guys.

Robert Allenby has taken to the claw putting grip after advice from Vijay Singh supposedly and led to a second place finish at the WGC event last week. He's 190th in the putting stats this year but was 28th last week at Firestone. He tied for 10th at Hazeltine in 2002 and he's still such a great iron player that he will threaten this week if the claw grip holds up.

It'll be nice to see how Brendan Jones and Michael Sim go. Both have had stellar seasons on the Japanese and Nationwide Tour respectively with Jones currently 3rd and Sim leading his tour.. Nathan Green won his first PGA Tour event a few weeks ago but was erratic last week.

Some other fine form has been seen from Mathew Goggin who seems to have played himself into some late season form and Geoff Ogilvy has had some good rounds. Something we haven't seen from him in many weeks.

You can't go past Allenby as Australia's main hope this weekend.

If you're hard up for something to do....go check out the individual player stats at the PGA Tour website. the breakdown and amount of information is absolutely extraordinary.

Fines, slow play and quitters

There's a couple of interesting stories floating around the world of professional golf at the moment.

The first concerns the WGC event last week and the battle between Tiger Woods and Padraig Harringon. The pair were warned for slow play at the 16th tee as they were 17 mins behind schedule. Harrington went on to make a triple-bogey after chipping into the water from a tough green-side lie. Tiger went on to win by four shots.

Tiger Woods made some comments regarding the hurry-up in his post-game interviews and has reportedly been fined for making disparaging remarks. He claimed Harrington would have spent much longer assessing the chip had they not received the warning and potentially may not have recorded the snowman. It's cause for thought but 17 mins behind is pretty slow.

The thing I find most annoying about this is that we see once again the preciousness of the PGA Tour. I'm more than happy if they fine players but why not just come out and say Tiger Woods was fined? Tell us why and maybe we could all make some constructive informed comments. This sort of behaviour also not only resembles a certain Australian sporting body but a few other powerful regimes. Golf Girl's Diary and Rub of the Green have some nice takes on the story.

Lastly, Michael Campbell has made headlines and it's not a good one. The always factual and credible English newspaper The Mirror has labelled Michael Campbell a "serial quitter" after withdrawing from the Open Championship last month. It was the fifth time he has withdrawn from an event this year. He made his first cut on the European Tour this year in Sweden two weeks ago and he's playing the PGA Championship this weekend. Maybe he's better suited to majors.

Thanks to Golfer Pacific for bringing this to the attrention of Aussie Golfer.

[Editor's Note: It appears the report of Tiger receiving a fine was inaccurate.

"Yes, I've heard from the Tour, and there's no fine," Woods said, referring to the Monday AP article. "It was an erroneous report."

He then didn't hold back in continuing his criticism of the situation:
Q:
"Do you in any way regret personalizing the issue by naming John Paramor in your criticism of — "
A: "No, because he's the one who did it."

It seems the PGA Tour have not fined Tiger this time. He's reportedly the most fined player on tour. It does not change the precious nature of the PGA Tour and my comments relating to their reactions to criticism's indeed still apply.]

New handicap system: how does it work?

Update: New changes to the Australian handicapping system take place from September 21, 2011. Read about changes here.

Aussie Golfer has reported a few times about the new course rating and handicapping changes that will soon be implemented to Australian golf. The change to the way your handicap is calculated is scheduled to take effect from February 1, 2010.

I'll outline how it will work for you here so you can let other golfers know. You will sound smart, interesting and people will like you even more.

The changes are based on the USGA Handicap System which features a "rolling sample" measure of your handicap. Let me explain.

From your last 20 scores from your golfing record, the best 10 Handicap Differentials are averaged to calculate your handicap (Handicap Differential = Gross Score - Course Rating).

Let's say a golfer's best 10 Handicap Differentials out of his past 20 rounds are +9, +11, +13, +15, +15, +15, +17, +13, +12, +12. The average of these differentials is 13.2. Now multiply this number by 0.96* and you get 12.672. Deleting all the numbers after the first decimal place we are left with 12.6. DO NOT round up!

Now, we DO round off this number to the nearest whole number to obtain the golfer's playing handicap, in this case it's 13.

There are provisions in place to determine handicaps for golfers who do not have 20 scores in their record. A lower number of Handicap Differentials are used to provide an average value for calculation.

Is that fairly clear? I've tried to make it as simple as possible and to be honest,I think it's a lot simpler than the current method. Look out for it. Coming to a golf course near you in February, 2010.

*What's with the 0.96?

Ryo Ishikawa

I assume you've all heard of Ryo Ishikawa right? If not, I've no doubt you soon will. He's fast becoming the Japanese Tiger Woods. I don't think I'm understating the expectations on him. Check out the link and his website sponsored by Panasonic. He's 17 you know.

A few years ago he became the youngest winner on the Japanese Tour and has just won 2 out of the last 3 tournaments. It was unfortunate he beat Brendan Jones last week in the process but his shots to win the event were quite amazing. Dare I say, a little Tiger like?

Tip of the hat to The Constructivist over at Mostly Harmless for bringing the video to my attention. Unfortunately, all of Brendan Jones' shots have been edited out but it's great viewing. It gives a nice feel for what we may see of this kid in future and just how big golf in Japan really is. It's something that's often forgotten.

He's teeing up in the PGA Championship next week.

Allenby may still boycott

Robert Allenby lashed out earlier this year after being furious as to the way he was treated at last year's Australian Open. There is no decision as yet but his management have said he is still considering boycotting this year's Australian Open at New South Wales Golf Club and will make a decision after the PGA Championship.

It comes along with the news that Geoff Ogilvy, Adam Scott, Greg Chalmers and John Senden have also confirmed their attendance at the Australian Open. Greg Norman has also committed to play the event for the next three years.

Robert Allenby played his 20th consecutive Australian Open at Royal Sydney last year and you would have been forgiven for not knowing it. There was no fanfare or acknowledgement from anyone. On top of that, the abuse he copped at the 17th party hole last year was out of order.

Thankfully, the party hole is not being implemented at New South Wales Golf Club this year. Now we need a few people from Golf Australia to make contact with Allenby and welcome him back. He's one of Australia's best golfers and has always done his bit for the Australian Tour. The last thing we need is another bitter, home-grown golfer who isn't given the respect and merit he deserves by Australian golf.

World Golf Championships on TV

Channel Ten’s One HD are covering the World Golf Championship Bridgestone Invitational this weekend. The country chosen to host this fabulous world event this week is.....the United States of America!

The event gathers the world's top golfers in one place for four tournaments a year, this week it's at Firestone Country Club in Ohio. You're going to have to be really keen, just getting in or have jetlag to see it at these crazy hours though.

Friday and Saturday: 4am - 8am.
Sunday and Monday: 2am - 8am.
There's repeat showings later each day except Saturday.

During the telecast on Sunday and Monday there's a show called "Omnisport" that One HD have thrown in at 3:30am? Right in the middle of the third and final round golf coverage! Let me know if anyone sees this show and whether it was worth the interruption to the golf.

[Thanks to Virge from the comment section below, we've established the half hour break is due to a break in US golf programming. Usually coinciding with a switch in US TV networks.]

P.S. If you can't watch this week, Fox Sports have the PGA Championship next week. Details to come.

Course Review: Gerringong GC, NSW

Gerringong Golf ClubThe Gerringong Golf Club lies on a stretch of road joining the towns of Gerringong and Gerroa. If you're a golfer and you've ever taken this road, you must remember the course. Placed in an open valley that stretches down to the ocean, it's quite a sight. Supreme real estate and a gorgeous place to hit the golf ball around.

The whole region has some amazing beaches and it's easy to be taken by the amazing views on any tee. The course plays pretty well and when the wind blows it's a tough test of links golf. Wind hardened greens and rolling slopes require a fair bit of thinking or local knowledge and at around $20 for a round, it's great value. There's only a few holes I'd regard as "squashed in" and a couple that are a little odd in their formation mainly due to the tract of land the course is situated.Gerringong Golf ClubThe highlight for me was the par-5 fifth hole which requires a lot of thought on each and every shot. Going for the green in two would be very high risk even with the wind behind you. The hole extends around the beach at the bottom end of the course. It has two large bodies of water to negotiate and the fairway is tight.

The course is punctuated with nicely placed water hazards and one very large area of rough which has been "let go". It's been designated a hazard so while you are free to play the ball from where it lies, there's more chance of finding David Duval's personality than your ball.

Gerringong Golf ClubChatting to some of the most friendly locals you'll come across after the 18th (I wish I'd chatted before teeing off), it seems they are in the process of building a new place to house the golf carts and looking for some financial input from out-of-towners. On a hilly stretch of land, a cart isn't a bad option here. Surprisingly there's no 19th hole on course but this is more like a local secret than an emerging resort course and if you haven't taken time out to check out the views at some point during your round, you're missing one of the points of golf.

Sometimes I'm guilty of trying to play the expensive, well documented, resort courses that are plentiful around Australia. However it's good practise not to disregard the smaller golf courses, you may just miss a hidden gem like Gerringong.
